Celastrus paniculatus seeds have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. In particular, the seeds yield as much as 52% oil by weight, and it is in this oil that numerous alkaloids are found, compounds such as celastrine and paniculatin.
I first discovered celastrus when I was studying for a big qualifying examination that required four to six hours a day of preparation for several months. I was looking for supplements that would help to enhance my cognitive abilities and that would keep me sharp while supporting my health and not causing negative side effects. I stumbled across as supplement called Cognihance, which has been clinically proven “to enhance memory and increase retention”, and which contains a great deal of Celastrus seed oil, among other things. I decided to research Celastrus a little more and found that in Ayurvedic medicine it is well known for its efficacy in increasing intellectual capabilities. Many Indian college students regularly consume half a teaspoon of Celastrus paniculatus oil each day as part of their daily diet – this acts as a brain stimulant, improving memory and recall.
Indeed, celastrus has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for its potent medicinal properties. In particular, it was used as a brain tonic, appetite stimulant, and emetic. It was much prescribed in cases of forgetfulness, mental fatigue and memory loss. Modern medicinal studies have only confirmed the incredible properties of celastrus seeds in supporting mental function. And indeed, after taking celastrus for a few days, I started to notice that I was more focused, that I could remember things more easily, and that it was much easier to retain that knowledge for longer. And I passed my exam with flying colors, in case you were wondering!
Celastrus also has a long history of use in helping with dream recall and lucid dream induction. After taking celastrus for about a week, I noticed that I was remembering my dreams much more often and with a great deal more clarity. Celastrus makes your brain sharper and improves memory, so of course it makes sense that it would make it easier to remember dreams and to attain awareness within them. Celastrus seeds are an essential part of my everyday diet, both for their cognitive benefits and for their beneficial effects on my dream work, and since there are no negative side effects to be found with celastrus, there is no reason not to add it to your diet as a supplement!
HOW TO PREPARE/RECIPE: There are many different methods I have found for preparing celastrus, but the most common use the seeds to extract their essential oils. In ancient India, the seeds were placed in a pot of boiling water or goat’s milk. Over a period of a few hours, the essential oils would rise to the surface, the seeds were strained out, and the mixture was allowed to settle. The oil could then be siphoned off and used. The oil can also be extracted using a screw press.
Fortunately, modern research has shown that celastrus seeds are just as effective when consumed with next to no prior preparation. You can even chew 10-12 seeds at a time, up to 100 a day, to get the same Celastrus paniculatus benefits. This is easy, but the seeds don’t taste great, so I prefer to soak a teaspoon of seeds in four cups of boiling water for three hours, then sweeten with honey or agave nectar and drink. If you don’t want to go through the fuss of consuming whole seeds, you can also purchase herbal tinctures, such as Cognihance, which contain celastrus and are very easy to take.
Use for more then 30 days in a row should be avoided. The brain stops producing acetylcholine.46.2 is straight ahead of you
Hi CallieK,Thanks for the comment. You’re right, this would be a great way to have trees gorwing where they were impossible before. Also a much quicker way of getting a mature looking specimen.Come to think of it Marion Jarvie ( an Uber-gardener in this city) has created a beautiful golden columner tree by training an Euonymus up a sturdy post.
Can anyone recommend where to buy celastrus paniculatus?
I’d go to http://www.cognihance.com. THey’ve got both capsules and raw seeds for sale.
I have within the last two weeks started to take whole celastrus seeds with honey (for bitterness) and can already see an improvement in my memory and also in my dream recall…I can’t wait to get my Calea zacatechichi (Dream Herb) in the mail to see how they interact together. Has anyone used these two herbs together with any improvement in lucid dreaming or recall?
I will have to try and brew this in mead and see if the honey sweetness does well with the bitterness of this herb and if it retains its properties after the fermentation process.
Hi,
Do you keep adding water to boil over the several hours? Do you have a recommendation of where to purchase the seeds?
Thanks,
G
I have been looking into cognihance and I feel as though it is to good to be true. Have there been any new studies on the side effects of the herbal supplement?
If so, can you attach a link to your response so I can read more about the herb.
The reason I ask for all the information is because I struggle at test taking due to the lack of being focused. Just now graduating from college and in my career path, there are several certifications that I want to take that require many hours of studying and prep time and I want to make sure that I am as prepared as possible for the exams. To build off of that, I am scared of the side effects that Cognihance will have on my mind and body.
Anymore information would be great.
Thank you,
Andrew
Andrew,
They offer a full 100% Money Back Guarantee, so it wouldn’t cost you anything to try it out for yourself. Alternatively, you can try chewing some Celastrus seeds instead…it’s not an easy to use capsule, but the seeds aren’t too bitter.
I think Cognihance has very tangible effects, but it’s not going to be for everyone, I’m sure.
Dream On,
Keith
I have recently started eating raw seeds. I eat about 15 large seed at a time and I chew them up as much as I can. I leave the seeds in my mouth as long as possible before swallowing. I Feel obvious effects about 30 minutes later. Caffeine like but no jitters. The taste isn’t that bad, I have had much worse (dream herb calea)
I bought a 100 ml bottle of celastrus seed oil from the net and I have been using it longer than half a year. First I took a drop every day, but after some months I take it when I remember or notice the bottle in my fridge.
Celastrus seed oil is quite expensive, but I highly recommend taking the oil for improving the clarity of mind. If I take a dose on a morning, a few drops is enough, it surely awakens my mind from stupor and keeps the mind clear whole day. I would almost say celastrus is better than caffeine (too much caffeine makes me anxious and makes my sweat sticky). Surely it’s one of the most effective dietary supplements I have tested as you can feel its benefits affecting your body. Bonus points, it’s not illegal in my country as are almost all the other dream herbs.
As for the negative side, celastrus seed oil has strong, bitter taste that is utmost horrible. You surely want to drink or eat something afterwards to wash the taste away. Besides the taste, only other side effect I have noticed is that if you take it in the evening, the mind clarifying effect makes it harder to fall asleep.
How does it improve dreams? Well, I can clearly recall dreams, almost every morning, after I started to use celastrus seed oil. Dreams are more vivid and movie-like with increased amount of detail. Of course, don’t expect to see lucid dreams every night, especially if you haven’t seen them before. But still, every time I took it, I can expect to see better, more vivid dreams, and for me that’s more than enough to endure the horrid taste.
Any side effects or long term studies of side effect of taking Cognihance ?
Great question Craig. There are no studies which show any negative side effects using Cognihance. And I can speak to this personally, as I have been using Cognihance nearly daily for the last three years. All I’ve seen is a marked improvement in my memory.
Anyone take the seeds raw?
Dear Malc,
You can certainly take the seeds raw, but you may end up eating quite a lot and the flavor may be a little bit challenging for some. Furthermore, eating a large quantity of the seeds may upset the digestive system. That’s why making a tea is a good option.
Which would you say is more effective, the Cognihance or consuming the seed it self?
Hi WMD,
I would go with the Cognihance for both effectiveness and ease of use. All it takes is a dropper full in your morning beverage every day and your off to stronger mental acuity. I have used both in the past and have settled on the Cognihance.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the comment; we are firm believers in the power of this (as of this writing) little-known herb. I’ve used this on more than a few occasions, and find it far more effective than Gingko bolioba for helping boost memory.
