Controlling DreamsOnce you have begun to learn how to have vivid and lucid dreams and are regularly able to recall them, it then becomes possible to begin to learn methods of controlling dreams themselves.  Using various techniques, it is possible to influence or control the dream state.  One can solve problems, end recurring nightmares, or process difficult real-life situations in the dream state by controlling dreams.  Control is not a necessary aspect of a lucid dream.  Some lucid dreams are very difficult if not impossible to control, while some non-lucid dreams can offer a great amount of control to the dreamer within the fabric of the experience.  The most sought after lucid dreaming state, however, is one in which the dreamer has complete control over the dream.

Often, when people start to get interested in the concept of lucid dreaming it is primarily due to the fact that they are interesting in controlling dreams.  After all, if you are able to take control in the dream state, it becomes possible to go anywhere in the world, to go to another world, to fly, to have amazing adventures, or to solve real life problems.  However, gaining this level of control over the fabric of dream space is something that usually requires an incredible amount of practice, patience, and effort.

Many people seem to think that controlling dreams is an instantaneous process that can be easily established and that once it is developed, will always work in just the way you want it to.  However, the human brain and the dream state are far too complex for this to be the case.  One can be confident that with sufficient amounts of practice and effort, dream controlling can be obtained, but it is also important to recognize how essential consistent practice is to this process.

Once you have started to have lucid dreams, and are capable of recognizing that you are in the dream state, then it will be possible to begin controlling dreams.  The most important aspect of this process is to firmly believe that it is possible for you to control your dreams fully.  It is also essential not to become too frustrated or aggravated if your attempts at dream control are not successful, as this will probably pull you out of the dream state.  You must be able to convince yourself that controlling dreams in any way you want to is completely possible.  The easiest things to control in a dream, of course, are your own actions.  Practice making decisions rather than just going along with the dream.  Try exploring the dream space, interacting with strangers, or doing other fairly normal real life activities within the dream space once you achieve lucidity.

Once you are confident with your ability to control your own actions within a dream, it then becomes possible to work your way up to the more fantastical aspects of controlling dreams.  Too much force can cause you to awaken, so begin by subtly and calmly trying to change aspects of the dream world itself.  Try changing the color of the sky or creating small objects.  Once you feel comfortable with this, it will be possible to work your way up to more complicated activities, such as flying.

One good technique that I find to be extremely helpful when controlling dreams is known as dream spinning.  If a dream begins to get out of your control, simply spin around and picture your ideal dream state.  Another good technique is to use verbal commands.  If you want something to change or to appear, state your desire out loud and visualize it in your head.

Once you become fully lucid in your dreams, the process of dream controlling will be well within your grasp.  However, it will take a great deal of practice to use your control easily and properly.  Constantly remind yourself that you are in control, and don’t get discouraged if you do not catch on as easily as you might like.  Controlling dreams can be challenging and requires a great deal of patience, but with the right amount of effort you will be sure to get exactly where you want to be before long.
